Videos are picked by a combination of automated algorithms as well as humans at YouTube and also based on parent feedback. No filtering system is 100 percent accurate, so this isn’t an excuse to leave your kids unsupervised but it’s a lot safer than letting them loose with the full-blown version of YouTube.
The app has profiles, so if you have more than one child they can log into their own profile for recommendations and settings. As a parent, you’re also in full control: you can select the age category (4 & under, 5-7 and 8+) so they see videos appropriate to their age, and you can also pick and choose which channels your kids can watch manually, or even individual videos. If you do use this Approved Content Only mode, the search function is disabled. You can see which videos your child has watched and there’s a built-in timer to limit how long they can watch.
