To whet your appetite, Red Barrel’s intro line for the game is such: “Outlast 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.” Read on if you have the nerve…

Release date and platforms

It’s been a while in the making but Outlast 2 is out now, after coming out on 25 April 2017. It’s available to play on PC, Xbox One and PS4.

Best deals

At launch, the cheapest was to grab Outlast 2 is for PC. Both Steam and GOG are selling the game for £22.99/$29.99 – the latter having the benefit of having no DRM included.  Console players can expect to pay ever so slightly more in the UK at least – it’s currently £24.99/$29.99 from the PlayStation Store, and £23.99/$29.99 from the Xbox Store. If you missed out on the first Outlast and its DLC Outlast: Whistleblower, there’s good news there too. As a special launch offer, GOG currently has Outlast and Whistleblower at 80% off for PC, making them a total steal.

Gameplay and videos

There are a few gameplay videos for Outlast 2 available so you can get a decent idea of what it will be like to experience. Leaving the first game’s asylum behind, Outlast 2 is set on a farm so you can expect barns full of body parts, the scariest cornfield you’ve ever seen (above) and such like. Although the location and setting has changed, the concept is still essentially the same. In Outlast 2, you play Blake Langermann, a cameraman working with your wife, Lynn – a pair of investigative journalists willing to go further to uncover stories. “You’re following a trail of clues that started with the seemingly impossible murder of a pregnant woman known only as Jane Doe. The investigation has lead you miles into the Arizona desert, to a darkness so deep that no one could shed light upon it, and a corruption so profound that going mad may be the only sane thing to do,” teases Red Barrels.
